What is the Ketogenic diet? Also known as the The Keto Diet, High Fat, Low Carb diet, or low carb diet, this diet is, as the name suggest, a diet that is high in fat and low in carbohydrates. This combination of fuel favours the formation of ketones by the liver. These ketones can cross the blood brain barrier and can be used as a source of fuel source by the brain. Ketosis is seen during periods of starvation where the body switches from using glucose from carbohyrates (either stored, or through immediate intake) to using ketones from the breakdown of fats in the liver, for energy.
This process can also be achieved outside of complete starvation through "starving" the body of carbohydrates. Ketosis offers a long list of benefits; weight loss improved glucose control better focus normalized hunger increases in energy normalizes cholesterol & blood pressure decreases episodes of seizures with epilepsy improved insulin resistance decreases acne The Ketogenic diet is not right for everyone, or may be right for you now, but might not be right for you in the future and vice versa.
